Wildfire Summer
British Columbia's 'Firestorm 2003'
On rugged slopes, the forest rose in splendor,
clothed in mist and feathered tints of green
that showed the sweeping artistry of time.
But now, its vigor gone, it lies defeated;
ashes coat a stark and vanquished land
once crowned with majesty; untouched, sublime.
Torched (cinquain)
Smoke spews.
Even the sun
blinks, red-eyed. The beast turns --
flames leap, charred limbs crack, roots smolder.
Slow death.

(haiku)
scattered
across the hushed valley -
cremated forest
